“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and the world better than you found it.” - Marian Wright Edelman

The Ottawa International Children's Festival:

• Actively promotes the enrichment of school curriculum as an integral part of children’s education.

• Offers free activities for the school groups such as face-painting and craft activities.

• Invites sponsorship for the Adopt-a-School Program allowing hundreds of children, who would normally not be able to participate in the magical environment.

• Provides an amazing theatrical experience in the immediate area; which would otherwise only be available in larger cities such as Montreal or Toronto; making end-of-school-year trips affordable and accessible.

Exposure to cultural events:

Encourages ‘audience’ behaviour and participation.

• Differs greatly from ‘screen’ activities such as TV, computer or film.

• Positive group interaction and different social skills can help to reinforce a more positive school environment.

• Teachers, students and parents participate in learning-fun situation.

• Students develop: better overall story understanding; see the importance of ‘skits’ and drama; and may encourage ESL students as many pieces are not solely language dependent.

Students are encouraged to participate.

Self-expression, awareness and esteem may well transfer in life and learning both in and outside of school. Trying new things, in an entertaining way can foster a willingness to learn.

Seeing others being innovative and ‘practiced’ can inspire children . . . to reach beyond their norm.

High school students may be inspired to follow a different career path in the arts, theatre or entertainment industries.

With 5 days of shows to chose from, Drama students of all ages benefit from experiencing international, professional productions. A variety of theatrical effects such as lighting, blocking, sound, special effects and overall presentation,  may highlight current studies, no matter what age level the show originally targeted.

Face painting by Kromatik is one of the annual events that brings elements of delight to the young and ‘young at heart’.

Imagination station: craft tent is another popular free event run by numerous volunteers where many high school students contribute their talent and clock in ‘community service’ hours.

"The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself.”  - Alan Alda
